Car donation is the act of giving a used and no-longer-wanted vehicle to a charity organization that runs a car donation program. It is becoming an increasingly popular practice, especially in the United States, thanks mostly to the tax benefit it provides to donors. After a car donation, the donor is then issued with a tax receipt for the donation, which they can use to avail of deductions come tax season. In 2000, it was reported that some 733,000 taxpayers were able to reduce their taxes by an estimate of $654 million. Many non-profit organizations in the United States have also come to rely on car donation for much of their revenue
Why it's better to donate than sell
Car donation programs are made very convenient and beneficial for both the donor and the organization. Donating a car is one of the easiest ways to get rid of an old, unwanted car, and at the same time earn from it. Selling an old car usually takes a lot of time and effort, and often, the amount that it is sold for is a lot lower than the original asking price. To get a buyer, you will also have to spend on repairs just to get a decent price for it. On the other hand, no matter how old a car is, and even if it does not work, a charity organization can still accept it as a donation and you will still get a tax receipt for it.
More perks
Most of the charity organizations who accept car donations also provide free vehicle pick-up to encourage more people to donate their used cars. They design their programs in order to save you time and money—after all, you are doing them a favor. Free pick-up is usually offered in all 50 states. Usually, all you will have to do is to call a toll-free number and provide all the necessary details for the donation. After you’ve given all the necessary information, the organization or a towing service will call you back to set a schedule for pickup. Upon pickup, you will receive a tax receipt proving that you made the donation. The organization takes care of everything else: documentation, sale or auction of the vehicle, and the distribution of the proceeds.
More on tax benefits
Usually, for cars valued at less than $500, you can make your own estimate of the car's value and therefore determine the amount of tax deduction. This is applicable even if the sale of the car produces less value than the estimated value. If the estimated value of the car is more than $500, the tax deduction will depend on the actual money that is received by the charity from selling the car.
